Earthaus Lime Stucco Finishes can be applied over conventional framed wall assemblies. Framed walls—typically built with plywood sheathing, a weather-resistive barrier, and expanded metal lath—require a traditional scratch and brown base coat.

Cement stucco basecoats are more widely available, less expensive, and familiar to most installers—but they’re also less breathable and more brittle. That can lead to cracking over time, especially in dynamic wall assemblies.
Earthaus PHL Binder basecoats are more breathable, more flexible, and less prone to cracking. They also have a lower carbon footprint than cement stucco, making them a more eco-conscious choice for plaster systems that need to manage moisture and movement.
Both options are compatible with Earthaus Lime Stucco Finishes—as long as they’re unsealed, unpainted, and properly installed.
The Earthaus Lime Stucco System is designed for use with expanded metal lath installed per ASTM C1063, over two layers of Grade D building paper and wood-based sheathing. Alternative lath and WRB systems may be used if they meet local and state codes and comply with IBC Section 2510.6 and ASTM C1063.
