Limewash: Suitable Substrates

Earthaus Limewash is a thin, two-coat, breathable lime paint hand-brushed that creates a velvety matte finish with soft tonal variation for depth and dimension. When applied over textured or contoured substrates, the mineral finish enhances the natural form without obscuring it.
Explore the compatible substrates below and learn how to properly prepare each one for a long-lasting, refined finish.
Brick
Interior
- Porous (unsealed, unpainted): Direct Application. Limewash penetrates the porous brick, bonding with it while allowing it to remain breathable.
- Sealed or Painted : Prime then apply. Limewash forms a surface layer and bonds to the top of the primed brick. Earthaus does not make a primer product - any latex or PVA primer will work well.
Exterior
- Porous (unsealed, unpainted): Direct Application. Limewash penetrates the porous brick, bonding with it while allowing it to remain breathable.
Concrete Block
Interior
- Porous : Direct Application. Limewash penetrates the porous concrete block, bonding with it while allowing it to remain breathable.
- Sealed or Painted : Prime then apply. Limewash forms a surface layer and bonds to the top of the primed concrete block. Earthaus does not make a primer product - any latex or PVA primer will work well.
Exterior
- Porous: Direct Application. Limewash penetrates the porous concrete block, bonding with it while allowing it to remain breathable.
Drywall
Interior drywall should be level-4 finished then primed. Limewash is a very thin coating and will not cover or hide any surface texture or imperfections. Priming ensures a uniform substrate. All drywall joints and screws should be well primed. Earthaus does not make a primer product – any latex or PVA primer will work.
The Limewash forms a surface layer and bonds to the top of the primed drywall.
Existing painted walls
Interior: Prime then direct application. If your walls are freshly painted or you trust your paint is uniformly impermiable, it is optional to prime. Earthaus does not make a primer product – any latex or PVA primer will work.

STONE
