Suitable for interior and exterior use, Limewash is a hand-brushed mineral paint that creates a soft, matte finish with subtle movement and texture. With excellent adherence and workability, it provides a lasting, natural patina that evolves over time.

Color considerations

Limewash is highly light refractive and the lighting of your space will strongly influence the depth of a color. Viewing Limewash colors in the lighting of your space using Sample Cards or Sample Kits is recommended before purchasing full sizes. White and off-white colors (noted on the Limewash Color Palette with the symbol ▫ ) will have an elegant matte brushed texture but with minimal to no tonal variation depending on lighting. Mid-range to darker colors will have more tonal variation and visible visual movement/ tonal variation. Layering two colors: a darker colored base coat & lighter colored finish coat can add depth and dimension.
Pot Life & Storage

Mixed Limewash will store indefinitely if stored with a tight lid in a frost-free location.
Unmixed Limewash will store up to two years if stored dry.

Brush stroke techniques

There are many Limewash application techniques. The following are several common application brush strokes:

Feathered
This technique involves light, feathery strokes, often in random directions. It creates a soft, airy texture on the wall, emphasizing the layered, organic quality of limewash. This method is popular for achieving a natural, vintage look.

Crosshatch
A popular technique in limewashing, the crisscross or “X” pattern is achieved by applying the brush in short, diagonal strokes that overlap. This technique adds a tactile, rustic texture and works well on both interior and exterior surfaces.

Figure-Eight
Creating small, overlapping figure-eight motions with the brush results in an organic, hand-touched effect. This technique adds a unique, artisanal quality to the surface, perfect for walls where an organic, handcrafted finish is desired.

Layering
Applying the first coat in a darker color and the second coat in a lighter color; each color layer adds variations in tone, adding depth and dimension to the wall.

Limewash Paint is suitable for direct application over several primed and porous wall substrates:

Primed Substrates
Limewash forms a surface layer on top of the primed substrate.

Porous Conventional Substrates
Limewash penetrates the porous (unsealed and unpainted) substrate, bonding with it while allowing the natural character of the substrate to subtly show through.

Limewash penetrates the natural porous substrate, bonding with it and allowing it to remain breathable.
